Austin summers are known for sunshine, long days, and temperatures that can make even the hardiest plants work overtime. When you’re choosing fresh flowers during the hottest months of the year, it helps to know which varieties naturally perform well in warm conditions – and which blooms can bring lasting color, texture, and personality to a summer floral arrangement.
Fortunately, some flowers seem practically made for summer. Vibrant zinnias, architectural celosia, resilient gomphrena, textured amaranth, and colorful salvia are all excellent choices for capturing the energy of a Central Texas summer. Many of these varieties thrive during hot growing seasons and, when properly conditioned and cared for after cutting, make wonderful additions to indoor bouquets and arrangements.
There’s an important distinction between a flower that thrives outdoors in the Texas heat and a cut flower that can simply be left in extreme temperatures.
Once a bloom is removed from the plant, it no longer has its root system supplying it with moisture. Every fresh-cut flower will last longer when kept hydrated and protected from excessive heat. Even varieties that flourish during scorching summers should not be left in a hot car, placed on a sunny windowsill, or expected to spend hours outdoors in triple-digit temperatures.
Instead, heat-loving flowers have an advantage because many naturally develop during the warmest part of the growing season and produce sturdy blooms that translate beautifully into summer floral designs. With that in mind, here are some of our favorite flowers for bringing the look and spirit of a Central Texas summer indoors.
Few flowers say “summer” quite like a zinnia.
Available in an incredible range of colors – from bright reds, oranges, and yellows to pink, purple, cream, peach, and softer pastel shades – zinnias bring immediate energy to a bouquet. Their layered petals and rounded blooms can serve as eye-catching focal flowers or mingle with other seasonal varieties for a relaxed, garden-inspired look.
Zinnias are especially well suited to Texas summers because the plants love sunshine and are known for handling heat. Texas A&M AgriLife describes zinnias as heat resistant, while Calloway’s Nursery notes that they are drought-resistant summer bloomers that work well as cut flowers.
Once they’re cut, however, zinnias still appreciate the same treatment we would give any fresh arrangement: plenty of clean water and protection from excessive heat. Stemz notes that cut zinnias perform particularly well in room-temperature or shaded settings with a reliable water source.

Celosia is instantly recognizable thanks to its unusual flower forms. Depending on the variety, the blooms can resemble feathery plumes, wheat-like spikes, or intricate, brain-like crests. Those sculptural shapes give florists the opportunity to add dimension and visual interest to an arrangement without relying solely on traditional round flowers.
Better yet, celosia loves warm weather. NC State Extension notes that celosia thrives in heat and humidity and that its flowers are suitable for both fresh-cut and dried arrangements. Stemz also identifies celosia as a hardy choice for summer floral design, with varieties available across a wide spectrum including green, pink, peach, orange, gold, red, burgundy, and purple.

Gomphrena – often called globe amaranth – may be smaller than some of the other flowers on this list, but don’t underestimate it.
Its rounded flower heads have a papery texture that gives them excellent visual staying power. NC State Extension notes that globe amaranth flowers retain their color well and can even be dried for use in floral arrangements. Certain varieties are also exceptionally heat- and drought-tolerant and work beautifully in both fresh and dried designs.
Gomphrena’s smaller size makes it particularly useful as an accent flower. Florists can scatter it throughout a design to provide pops of pink, purple, white, or other colors without overpowering larger focal blooms.

Summer arrangements don’t have to be composed entirely of large, rounded blooms. Adding vertical flowers creates contrast – and that’s where salvia can shine.
Salvia produces clusters of flowers along distinctive spikes, giving an arrangement height, movement, and a more naturalistic silhouette.
Many salvia varieties are known for performing extremely well in hot climates. Calloway’s Nursery identifies annual salvia as a drought-tolerant option that thrives in the hot, sunny conditions of Texas summers.
